Our "Social Squad" group launched this week with an innovative mission: plant and nurture the seeds of social engagement.
Trying new things, meeting new people - that can be challenging. What are good things to do? How do you plan your time and expenses? How do you find friends to go with you?
And yet the mental and emotional benefits that we gain from engaging with other people and with activities in our community can't be overstated. Social connections provide joy, confidence, and comfort. They give us a sense of belonging and assure us of our value.
We at Partners in Autism want all the individuals in our community to know that they can be successful at making strong social connections. We want those we serve to feel secure and confident as they try new activities and meet new people.
So after gathering input from our clients about the types of venues they'd like to explore, we mapped out monthly excursions to a variety of locations.
For this first month, we went to the Putt-Putt Fun Center ... and what a fun success it was!
There were obvious triumphs:
We had a great time putt-putting, the weather was bright and clear, and the arcade was a blast. We were active and enjoyed ourselves.
There were less obvious, but such meaningful triumphs:
We practiced budgeting (our time and our money). We practiced navigating our own disappointment and celebrating other's success. We practiced interacting with staff and cashiers. And we practiced social appropriateness within our group and with individuals outside our group.
But most of all, there were triumphs that will continue to grow and flourish:
We met new people. We talked, teased, and encouraged. We made connections that our clients can continue to strengthen at our next outing or pursue on their own in the meantime by planning their own outings with peers.
By helping to form initial connections, we look forward to seeing those we serve grow in confidence and independence within community.
We are also looking forward to our second outing next month: the Fort Wayne Zoo! Watch our Facebook and Instagram pages for announcements!
